Pittenweem fishing memorial

The fishing memorial at Mid Shore, Pittenweem

"This memorial is dedicated to the men and women who make their living from the sea
and to those who have lost their lives in so doing"

The Pittenweem fishing memorial by sculptor Alan Herriot was unveiled in 2019 close to the harbours in the East Neuk fishing town and memorialises hundreds of lives lost to fishing over the decades. It reflects something of 19th century romanticism movement in art that "discovered" the fishing communities of East Scotland and celebrated some aspects of their lives as indigenous peasant culture. The reality was both harder and more magnificent and not just because the women were physically strong from all their work. These "Fishwives" whether married or not, were independent, resourceful, managed their family's income and made their own income.
