The city of Anzio, south of Rome created this monument to its fishermen in 2018 in Alberto Bragaglia Square. It's set back from the harbour where at midday you can buy fresh blue fish and moray eels off the small open boats that have worked the waters for hundreds of years.
The monument isn't personalised with names of lost fishers, but on 5 June 2020 crowds gathered there to mourn Fathi Ben Salem, the fisherman who drowned the day before when the Gabriella sank in a storm. The mayor of Anzio Candido De Angelis proclaimed the city in mourning to honour Fathi Ben Salem, saying, "We gather around our Monument to the Fisherman, for all the seamen who have not returned to their families and friends". Fathi Ben Salem, known as Peppe was married with two sons and the Anzio Merchants Association launched a public fundraising to support his family in solidarity.
