Newhaven Fishermen’s Memorial

The Newhaven Fishermen’s Memorial remembers six of the many people killed fishing off the coast of Sussex. Family members campaigned for the memorial which was made of steel and copper and designed by artist Christian Funnell.

It forms a shoal of fish in a net and was unveiled in May 2022 with the fishermen's families. They were joined by the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) crews who tried to save the men, members of the Coastguard, the Mayor of Newhaven Lesley Boniface, and Maria Caulfield, Conservative MP for Lewes.

Darren Brown drowned trying to untangle a fishing line from the propeller of Our Sarah Jane in 2016. Joe Bowen, Andrew Penfold and John Ship died when Sylvia Marita sank in 1979. Records of a disaster fund set up for their families are in the East Sussex Record Office.
